The weather on the OBX has been CRAZY this winter, starting with the snow storms in January. A week or so ago we had temps in the 80's and a few days ago a coastal storm brought 50 MPH+ winds for a few days. Combined with high tides, the winds wreaked havoc on the coast, creating overwash in several areas. Roads are still closed south of the Oregon Inlet Bridge.
Overwash in Kitty Hawk on NC-12 left many portions of the road impassable on Sunday...
This picture from NCDOT (March 6, 10:00 am) shows road conditions on NC-12 as work crews attempt to reopen roads to Hatteras Island.
